Vayishlach - Your Weekly Mission - by Rabbi Laibl Wolf
Vayishlach (Sat. 10th Dec./16th Kislev)
Packing for Journey
Your Weekly Mission - by Rabbi Laibl Wolf
Yaakov’s stay with Lavan is described as ‘garti’ – a temporary stay or estrangement. He never viewed amassing wealth with the rich Lavan as his goal, and viewed his stay as temporary, and remained estranged from Lavan’s values, maintaining Taryag Mitzvot.
Notes:
• Garti: An unusual choice of words describes Yaakov stay with Lavan viz. garti, a ‘temporary stay’, or ‘as a stranger’, the word also having the same letters as Taryag – 613.
• Legacy: Our meaning, the material aspects of our life are only temporal and temporary. We don’t take them with us. Only our values and truths remain as a legacy.
• Foreign: We should always view any quest for material security as foreign to our higher goals and aspirations, especially as a Jew carrying out our mission in the world - 613.
• Suitcase: The Maggid taught: At home we seem to need everything, while on a journey we take very little of what we own. Life is a journey. Don’t quest to amass wealth and assets.
• MISSION: This week reassess what you are working for and what values you will leave.
