ISLANDS
Composer | Antonio Moreno Glazkov (*1999)
In Islands the choir sings about the search for the connection between ourselves and others. Glazkov wrote the text for this piece himself. After reading the book The Quiet Room - about the life of Lori Miller, an American woman with psychosis - he was inspired to write a composition about how we relate to others and to what extent we can really understand and know each other. Following a conversation with a friend, the metaphor of the island arose: are we all individual islands that cannot get closer to each other? Or can we build a bridge to the other?
Throughout the piece the central question “Am I really just an island?” is almost constantly present, but sometimes almost unintelligible or imperceptible due to the fast and overlapping rhythms. Even in our hasty lives, existential questions, such as the question central to this piece, all too often fade into the background and we have to make time to really listen to what is going on inside us. With his composition, Antonio invites us to pause in the hustle and bustle and relate to our own inner world and that of others.
JIP Chamber Choir is a project choir from Utrecht, the Netherlands, founded in 2013 by brothers Jonathan and Imre Ploeg. JIP wants to present new and unknown choir music from all over the world, brought together in surprising, engaging and fundamental themes like war and peace, the nomadic life, the refugee crisis and the ecological crisis.
