When Old Man Bernie arrived at our rescue, our hearts shattered into a million pieces. Ten-year-old Bernie’s forehead was just one big open wound. His skin was slick with oily residue, and he reeked of chemicals. But then, the shelter told us something that twisted our stomachs up in knots.

The shelter’s intake team did the best they could for Bernie, but his injuries were just too severe. They cleaned and dressed his wounds, but then, the situation took a horrifying turn. As the hours passed, Bernie’s skin began sloughing off, peeling and separating from his body.

The damage is agonizing, and it’s only getting worse as time goes on. Bernie has almost no weight on his frame, he moves with great difficulty, and he’s clearly suffering. But through it all, he’s still desperate for a gentle touch and affection. We don’t know what happened to Bernie, whether this was a freak accident or human cruelty, but if he doesn’t get specialized help ASAP… we don’t even want to imagine what may happen.

Bernie requires immediate medical treatment. The dead and burned skin must be carefully removed to prevent infection and allow healing to begin. He needs pain management, around-the-clock care, and a chance to know kindness in his golden years. Rescues everywhere are struggling, and we are no exception. We’re doing everything we can to give Bernie a second chance, and we need YOU to join our fight.
