Fungal Infection Leaves Cat’s Swollen Face Littered With Wounds That Refuse To Heal [STORY BELOW]
DONATE: https://cuddly.com/donate/4959720/brisa/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=organic
Brisa’s face is swollen and bloody. Her condition is plummeting. We need to act FAST. Brisa’s surgery is just a few days away, and the cost of her procedure and ongoing treatment is threatening to plunge our rescue into debt. We refuse to give up on Brisa, but we can’t fight for her alone. Will you be the miracle she needs?
A few weeks ago, we received an urgent message from a cat colony caretaker about a feral cat named Brisa that we had trapped, spayed, and returned last summer. She told us that Brisa’s face was swollen, and she had wounds that wouldn’t heal. After we stopped by to assess Brisa’s condition, we were shocked by what we discovered.
We immediately suspected Cryptococcus. The nasal form of this fungal infection is most common and involves chronic nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, swelling of the nose and face, deep, non-healing wounds, and even masses or polyps in the nasal cavity. To make matters even more challenging, Brisa has never allowed a human to touch her. Humanely trapping her was the only way to get her the help she needed.
It took our team and the colony caretaker a week’s worth of attempts to catch Brisa. When we finally succeeded, we took her straight to our trusted veterinarian. He sedated her to do a full medical exam, run bloodwork, send out a biopsy, and run a combination test. Her bloodwork revealed mild anemia, infection, and some liver issues.
In the meantime, our veterinarian sent Brisa to her foster home with pain medication and antibiotics while we waited for results. Well, the biopsy results came back, confirming our suspicion of Cryptococcus. Due to the severity of Brisa’s case, the vet believes we will need to be more aggressive with her treatment than we initially planned.
The next step in Brisa’s recovery involves “debulking,” which is to surgically remove as much of the infected area as possible. This procedure will be extremely delicate, since we don’t know how much bone is left. Then, we will likely need to administer Amphotericin, which is an intense treatment. Brisa will need to go to the veterinarian two or three times a week for injections and fluids. We will also need to test her kidneys before each injection. We’re hoping this will make her more comfortable.
Our team recently received two new estimates for Brisa’s treatment moving forward. The first is the surgical estimate and base labwork for $2,133. The second estimate is her 15-week course of Amphotericin and the lab work associated with each injection for $1,474. Brisa’s surgery is just a few days away, and her injectable treatments will begin three weeks after that. In the meantime, Brisa has moved to a new foster home where she is learning the joy of sleeping in a cozy bed and has made friends with resident cats.
We are honored to be a part of Brisa’s story, but her treatment and recovery will only be possible through donations. We are a small-but-mighty nonprofit rescue doing everything we can to save as many lives as possible, and we can only do what we do thanks to the support of animal lovers everywhere. As much as Brisa is counting on us, she’s counting on YOU, too. Will you be this hurting soul’s lifeline?
Don’t look away. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. We urge you to donate to Brisa’s surgery and ongoing care fund today. Words can’t begin to express how crucial every ounce of support is right now. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your compassion, and be sure to check back soon for updates on Brisa’s healing journey.
With hope and determination,
