Kanchanaburi Check-Dam Building September 15th 2012

A short video of the check-dam building volunteer event in Kanchanaburi. Despite rain and mud, the volunteers never lost their smiles and good cheer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
During this year, droughts in Kanchanaburi caused a water shortage in the jungle of Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary. Now, at the end of the rainy season, and with the trees for 2012 all planted, we mostly work on the water supply for the elephants. Many of the two hundred wild elephants living in the jungle were forced to leave their normal territory and wander closer to human habitation in search of water for drinking and bathing. Elephants can find water from a great distance away, and on their travels, often stop to eat from fruit and corn plantations. This adds to the conflict between wild elephants and local people. With dry season just around the corner, there is an urgency to the issue. An easy solution to this is to remove the need for the elephants to leave the jungle. We can do this by building check-dams to catch water in the rainy season and plant trees for the elephants to eat. Besides creating watering holes for elephants and other animals, this also allows water to be absorbed into the ground, thus creating a higher humidity in the forest.
