One of the top 10 things to do in Lisbon is to visit a museum, but which museums are worth your time? The Maat Museum (aka Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology) and the Tejo Power Station in Lisboa are two that deserve some attention. Sitting on the riverfront of the historic district of Belém in Lisbon. Melissa and I have always been intrigued by the fabulous architecture of these museums. We have taken many walks in front of the Maat Museum and on this sunny day We just couldn’t resist seeing what was happening on the inside of these curious-looking structures.

Once inside the museum, we are presented with an exhibition on the main floor called Prisma from Portuguese graffiti and street artist Alexandre Manuel Dias Farto, aka Vhils.

Vhils believes that destruction is a form of construction. You read that right. As crazy as it sounds, he has found a unique method, and that is by etching, scratching, carving, and even exploding walls!

There are no explosions in this exhibit, but several digital images of everyday life in nine major cities: Beijing, Cincinnati, Hong Kong, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Macao, Mexico City, Paris, and Shanghai, where the artist has carried out over the last few years, critical public artworks. It's a very entertaining exhibit. Sadly it is not a permanent fixture; It will be around only for a few months. But there are always opportunities to see works from Vhils throughout Lisbon.

Once we finished exploring the inside exhibits, we passed by the swanky Maat Museum cafe. We then visit the rooftop terrace to enjoy the views of the river, the April 25th Bridge, and Christo Rei from afar. After taking in the breathtaking views from the rooftop terrace, we strolled next door to the Tejo Power Station.

The Tejo Power Station was a thermoelectric power plant that supplied power to the entire Lisbon region. Built-in 1908, its production activity took place between 1909 and 1972.

In a new phase in its history, the Tejo Power Station opened to the public for the first time in 1990, then as the Electricity Museum. After an additional period of restoration works on its buildings and equipment, it reopened permanently in 2006.

It took its last breath in August 1972, two years before the April Revolution. That summer, opponents of the Salazar regime damaged the high voltage lines that supplied Lisbon, shrouding the city in darkness. Therefore the authorities turned to the old Tejo Power Station to minimize the lack of power. Former employees were called upon, and boilers were turned on, reactivating energy production for the capital for one week, generating one-fifth of the electricity consumed.

This video is jam-packed with all the stairs you can step on, bees, dad jokes, and lots of interesting Lisboa eye candy. Come hang out with us as we explore two great Lisbon museums. - Cheers! Michael
