Beyond the Concert Hall: Dominic Daula

The Vancouver Recital Society's Founder & Artistic Director, Leila Getz, speaks to Dominic Daula, pianist and researcher. Dominic is a D.M.A student at the University of Cape Town (UCT), researching the British pianist and composer Alan Bush. Dominic and Leila came into contact through his research advisor, James May, who was in Leila's class when she attended UCT in the 1960s. Dominic and Leila discuss his early life and his piano studies with Dr. Widor du Toit in his home town of East London, and compare Dominic's current experience at UCT to Leila's experience when South Africa was still under apartheid. They also chat about Dominic's time studying in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music, and how Dominic developed his interest in Alan Bush, Ronald Stevenson, and other contemporary composers.
