They can be called lumbar disc herniations, disc bulges, disc rupture, free fragments, and sequestered discs (all being slightly different conditions of the lumbar disc).

Lumbar disc pathology can cause pressure on the spinal nerves that exit the lumbar spine and pressure on those nerves can cause pain into a leg. It can also cause weakness and loss of sensation in your leg because the lumbar spinal nerves carry sensation, reflexes, and motor control to your legs.
