Justin Fok was travelling from Sydney to Brisbane when the woman sitting next to him put her bare feet onto the seat, brushing up against his thigh.

He said “wrinkly, crusty, and long untrimmed nails” were suddenly touching his leg, and though “nobody said a word” about the faux pas, he believes it’s an “unspoken common courtesy” to keep body parts to yourself.

Aviation expert Justin Brownjohn said he is a “supporter of shoes being mandated to fly”, telling Yahoo News it is “never appropriate to put your bare, or covered for that matter, feet on a fellow passenger.”

Not only is it inappropriate, it’s also a major safety issue, particularly at take-off and landing.

Brownjohn said, “It is well documented that those phases of flight are where most incidents happen - if you need to evacuate the aircraft, you don’t want to have to do it barefoot. Having your shoes on will protect your feet, as well as meaning less loose items flying around.”

Yahoo understands that Virgin requires guests to conform to minimum dress requirements, including wearing footwear on flights.
