Gabriela: Alexa helps her build stronger connections - with audio description │ Alexa Stories

Originally from Mexico, Gabriela is a family case worker with a young son. Gabriela's mother lives with her family and helps care for her son while she works. Although Gabriela and her son are bilingual, her mother solely speaks Spanish—and she uses Alexa to translate words that help her better communicate and build a stronger connection with her grandson.

If you have a story of your own about how you use Alexa, we'd love to hear it and will continue sharing some of our favorite #AlexaStories. You can email us at AlexaStories@amazon.com or tag us on Twitter or Instagram @alexa99 or #AlexaStories.

This video portrays a mother, Gabriela, with her mother, playing with toy cars with her son.

Uplifting music starts playing.

Words appear on the screen: “Gabriela’s Story”.

Gabriela: “My name is Gabriela, I am a family case worker, so I predominately work with pregnant moms and moms with infants. I am married, I have a son, and I am originally from Mexico.”

Gabriela pushes her son on a swing that hangs from a tree. They start playing in a sandbox together.

Gabriela: “In my line of work we have a lot of refugees, and language is a barrier. If we don't have a translator it's really really hard to connect with them, so Alexa helps me translate some of these words, helping me understand them better and connect with them.”

Gabriela and her son chase each other around with pool noodles in their front lawn, Gabriela’s mother watches them play. Gabriela spins around with her son in her arms.

Gabriela: “My mother lives with us, with my husband and I; and Sebastian, my son, stays at home with her all day.”

An Amazon Echo Dot is shown on a shelf next to a window.

Gabriela: “So Alexa helps me with that, but I usually drop in around 9 a.m. to remind him that he needs to brush his teeth, he needs to change into his day clothes, and make sure they're doing okay.”

Gabriela swings her son on another swing. Gabriela, her mother, and her son continue to play in a sandbox together.

Gabriela’s mother reads a book to her grandson in the living room. They start playing with toy cars.

Gabriela: “So my mother has been using Alexa for translating. My son speaks both languages, I want to say English and Spanish, and my mother is only a Spanish speaker. A lot of times my son will come up with words that maybe she's not understanding, so with Alexa she can just ask her. It does make their bond stronger.”

Gabriela’s mother plays with her grandson in the backyard. She picks up her grandson and he gives her a kiss on the cheek.

They continue to embrace each other, and Gabriela’s mother kisses her grandson.

A grid of photos of Alexa customers shows up on screen, along with words that say: “Share Your Story.”

Words appear on the screen: “AlexaStories@Amazon.com.”

The photo grid and titles cross fades into an Alexa Logo.

The music fades. The video ends.
