Albino elephant calf Khanyisa takes her first walk to the dam
Khanyisa goes exploring!
New scents and surroundings for Khanyisa as she ventured beyond boundaries of the neighbouring elephant stables.
We recently took Khanyisa beyond the borders of the orphanage that she has become accustomed to, and into the Jabulani herd stables while they were out foraging on the reserve during the day.
Over the past two days, Adine decided to take Khanyisa out with her to venture even further and explore the nearby dam on the reserve, all in the protection and guidance of our team, of course.
The first time she took up the pace with our team as we took a little jog to the dam, (also essential exercise for her), and she was taking in all the new smells and noises with her tail upright and her trunk very curious too.
She spent a bit of time at the water's edge but soon lost interest in the water and wandered off with Lammie to investigate the area.
Herman, one of her dedicated carers brought her milk bottles along, and she enjoyed her first bottle at the dam too.
When she returned to the orphanage, she was super tired and filled with excitement, just like a little child is after a busy day out playing, and overtired for sleep. And when she herd Tokwe, the matriarch and her herd returning from their day our, she was very interested, like she knew or understood more now.
We are delighted that we have taken this next step with her, and will share tomorrow about her second trip to the dam!
