Khanyisa's Woolly Elephant Carer, 6-year-old Lammie the Pedi Sheep Legend
Friend to all, animal and human, this special pure-bred Pedi-sheep has been by Khanyisa’s side since the very beginning of the elephant calf’s rehabilitation at HERD.
Our favourite 6-year-old woolly carer has provided Khanyisa with essential comforting companionship and joyful fun, games and stimulation daily - on jaunts around the nursery that she currently shares with Khanyisa & on walks and jogs in the Reserve, while roaming with her buddy.
Lammie has stood by Khanyisa through ups and downs and watched her friend heal and grow and head out with her herd more and more as the elephant has continued her phased integration into the Jabulani herd.
Many of you have asked about how Lammie copes with this new empty nest now that Khanyisa is out all day in the wilderness, with Lammie remaining “at home”. Lammie certainly loves company, and for now her ele-friend is still with her overnight. Lammie is there to see her off at sunrise and welcome her back at sunset.
Lammie’s presence is still incredibly beneficial for Khanyisa at the nursery in the evenings, as the two have bonded so beautifully since a bit of a rocky start when Khanyisa was still coming to understand and accept her roommate.
When Khanyisa joins the herd permanently, sleeping with them at night, Lammie’s next phase could include possibly joining another companion sheep or caring for a new orphan. Time will tell, but this beloved and unique sheep will be looked after with great care and love, just as she has looked after so many - rhino and elephant alike.
THANK YOU, sweet sheepy carer!
