A59 - Kingsway Tunnel (Wallasey Tunnel) - Liverpool to Wallasey

The Wallasey Tunnel - officially the Kingsway Tunnel, is a 1.5 mile / 2.4km tolled road tunnel, running under the River Mersey, linking Liverpool City Centre to Wallasey on the Wirral Peninsula.

The first Mersey tunnel, Queensway, was built in the 1930s, linking Liverpool to Birkenhead, but by the 1960s this was becoming overloaded. Construction of the Kingsway Tunnel began in 1966 as twin-bore with two lanes in each direction. The first tube opened to traffic in 1971, followed by the second in 1974. It now carries around 45,000 vehicles per day.

This video shows a westbound crossing of the tunnel, from the sliproad with the A59 Scotland Road in Liverpool, to the northernmost end of the M53 motorway in Wallasey.
