St John Passion: 15. Christus, der uns selig macht (piano transcription)

The rich, dissonant harmonies magnify the misery conveyed through the libretto. Even the stealthiness of a thief is captured by the ascending chromatic bass line. This movement begins and ends on the same chord (E), the dominant, which brings a sense of instability and portent.

The bass E in the last bar is optional, depending on the acoustics.
