Its Time To Unleash The Beast! - Subaru WRX Restoration

Well its finally here the day the Subaru is ready to hit the streets again! But before i let her loose there is still some work to be done.

For this one i had to beg my buddy to give me some time on his ramp so that i could sort out the center section of the car and fit a nice new stainless steel exhaust system.

First on on the list was to strip everything out that was blocking my access to the floor, so that was the exhaust, prop shaft, gearbox mounts and a few other bits and pieces. Once stripped i could give the floor a good soaking with an all purpose cleaner to remove all the road grime this was left to soak for a good half hour before blasting clean with a pressure washer.

Once clean i had to leave it to dry so this was an ideal time to go back to my own workshop and make a start on cleaning up the components, so i first gave them a wash, sand blasted them clean , primed and then painted them gloss black and while the paint on those parts were curing i headed back to the other workshop to start prepping the car.

to prep the car i set about the rust with various wire brushes to remove the oxide and get back to clean steel, this was then treated with hydrate 80 to stop rust forming again and then all the areas were primed in preparation for the application of Raptor liner tinted to the same shade of white as the rest of the car, this was applied by spray gun to give an OEM texture. Once applied i had to leave it overnight to cure.

I was back the next morning with all of the restored parts to fit back onto the car as well as my new exhaust system that i had custom made. So i fitted all the parts and torqued them to spec, and fitted the new stainless exhaust from the turbo back and what a noise she makes now but you'll hear that for yourself a little later on.

After that it was a case of heading back to my own workshop to do the finally clean up all the years of dirt that had accumulated on the paintwork. As i explain in the video, its a case of washing washing and more washing with a bit of claying and special sprays in between. Once the paint was fully decontaminated i could give it a good polishing to bring back the shine and then protect that shine with a few layers of PTFE wax and then it was finally time to hit the road.

Now i couldn't drive the car hard as the engine is still being run in and any full boost or high stressing could either significantly reduce the performance of the engine in the long run or worse could detonate entirely as its not mapped for the mods yet so easy does it.

At this point i would like to apologize for my on the road footage i did my best but im a restorer not a cameraman/editor but i think in future i probably will hire a professional to sort out the cool on the road shots.

See you all again soon

A little History

The project in question is the engine bay in my 94 Subaru Impreza WRX. As i can be heard saying in the intro of this video i love impreza's and i wanted a rust free one as all the UK ones suffer from lots of rust issues so in 2004 i imported this car from Japan and it was totally rust free when it arrived all those years ago. It has a couple of blisters here and there now but thats to be expected when living in Scotland.

Anyway im getting off track, I was having lots of fun driving the car at full boost everywhere until 2014 when the thought popped into my head " lets go for more power" so i took the engine out and begun the process of having it all upgraded, better gaskets, race bearings, forged pistons, con rods etc etc then life got in the way and the engine was put to the side and the car was stored in a shed for the past 5 years.

The initial condition of the car looks horrifying but its only a thick layer of dust and crud on it and there is a good layer of carnuaba wax separating all the crud from the paint so a quick pressure wash and she'll be looking good again .
