India and Canada Reset Relations: Modi, Jaishankar Meet Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand

After two years of diplomatic frost, India and Canada appear ready to rebuild relations. On October 13, 2025, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi — marking a major thaw since the fallout over the 2023 killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

In a joint statement, both nations announced plans to restart ministerial-level trade and investment talks, re-establish the Canada-India Ministerial Energy Dialogue, and relaunch the Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee. Canada’s tech and AI firms are also invited to India’s AI Impact Summit in February 2026 — signalling that innovation could pave the way for renewed trust.

Agriculture, clean energy, and education are expected to anchor this new phase of cooperation. While some Sikh groups have criticised Anand for avoiding community issues, others have praised her pragmatic, forward-looking diplomacy.

With trade touching $23.6 billion in 2024 and both sides aligning parts of their Indo-Pacific strategies, the stage is set for a cautious but promising reset. If progress continues, Anand’s visit could mark the moment when India and Canada turned the page on one of their most difficult chapters.
