Pakistan Bans Islamist Party TLP Again After Deadly Anti-Israel Protests

Pakistan has once again banned the hardline Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) following deadly clashes with police that left at least five people dead. The government accused the party of engaging in “terrorist and violent activities” during an anti-Israel protest that spiralled into chaos ahead of US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire announcement on Gaza.

The cabinet unanimously approved the ban, which marks the second time the TLP has been outlawed in four years. Founded in 2011, the Sunni Barelvi movement gained nationwide recognition for defending Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws. It formally entered politics in 2016 and garnered over two million votes in the 2018 general elections.

The party was previously banned in 2021 under former Prime Minister Imran Khan but was reinstated after pledging to abandon violence. However, the latest unrest has renewed concerns about Pakistan’s growing religious extremism.

Human rights organisations warn that suppressing the TLP could backfire, further radicalising its supporters and deepening sectarian divides. Blasphemy remains one of Pakistan’s most volatile issues, often inciting mob violence and extrajudicial killings. The renewed ban underscores the government’s struggle to balance public order with political freedoms in an atmosphere charged with religious sensitivities.
