Walking Guadalajara; Cantina “El Velorio”
A few days in Guadalajara and walking the streets of the old town, stumbled upon this curiously named cantina, “el Velorio” which means something like the viewing at a funeral. And there are two stories behind the name, one that since there were a lot of fisheries and bars etc in the area a hundred years ago, the bar would close, according to the law, but the workers of those places, the patrons of the bars, the stripers, prostitutes, etc. would come and buy booze through a small window, and since there were only candles illuminating the interior, the name seem appropiated.
The second story tells of the son of the owner telling his mother he’s going to a velorio every time he ended up at the bar, which back then had a different name…
We passed by on our way to San Juan de Dios, and made a pit stop for a tequila shot
