Today we’re reviewing the CAD GXL2400 USB Condenser microphone. So let’s take a closer look.

The GXL2400 comes ready to go out of the box. The base kit comes with the mic itself, a folding tabletop mic stand with a shock mount that screws onto the mic stand and a 6ft usb cable. The mic drops into the shock mount.

The mic’s body is made from cast aluminum and has a steel mesh that covers the cardioid condenser capsule. Now the mic doesn’t come with a user manual and honestly you really won’t need one. Its that simple to use. Plug the usb cable into the bottom of the microphone and then plug the other end into your Mac or PC. Its pretty much plug-n-play. Most PCs and Macs will recognize the device as soon as it’s plugged in. You can then use any recording software you’d like. I recommend using Audacity, mostly because it’s free and works amazing well.

The GXL2400 can be unscrewed and mounted to any mic stand or boom arm that has a ⅝” thread. And I’ll leave links to some mic stands and boom arms that will work with this mic, in the description below.

The audio you’re hearing now is from the CAD GXL2400. I’ve mounted the mic on the shock mount which is connected to the provided desktop stand. The recording surface is covered with a windscreen. You can use a pop filter instead and I’ll leave links to both the windscreen and pop filter that will work with this mic, in the description below. I am about 3 inches away from the mic’s recording surface. I am going to read you a quote, so you can hear how it sounds.

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” And that’s a quote from Nelson Mandela.

So as you could probably tell, the audio quality is just superb, especially when you consider its price. Its absolutely amazing- crisp, clear and with very little background noise. And if you’re wondering how it performs for singing and other types of vocal recordings. The answer is: it performs really well. I wish I could prove it to you…..but trust me….you don’t wanna hear me singing!

Now the mic doesn’t have a headphone jack so you can’t monitor your audio live. However, we need to remember that this is an entry-level, inexpensive, no-frills mic that produces excellent audio quality.

So should you buy this mic. If you’re a beginner looking for an inexpensive mic for podcasts, youtube videos or vocals, and you can live without live monitoring, its hard to find something better than the gxl2400. Its recording quality is superb and its very simple to use. However, if you absolutely need live monitoring, I’d recommend upgrading to the Audio-technica atr2500. I’ll leave links to both mics below. So feel free to check them out. If you own one of these, tell us what you think, in the comments section below.
