Today we’re looking at the Samson Go Mic Direct, USB condenser microphone. The first thing you’ll notice about the Go Mic Direct is how tiny this mic is. It measures just under 2 inches by 2 inches and is almost a perfect square. The base is made from plastic, while both the recording surfaces have a metal grill on them. There’s a little LED next to each recording surface that indicates recording status and if you’re peaking. The LED is green when the mic is plugged in and ready to record and flashes red when you’re peaking. This is really useful when setting the correct input gain and to ensure you’re not too close to the mic. Its full size USB connector reveals itself when you push and slide the button on the bottom. The connector tucks back into the body when you slide the button back and this ensures that the Go Mic fits inside a tiny, padded, protective case that Samson provides with the Go mic. A very thoughtful touch, especially since most people will probably travel a lot with this mic. The device is pretty much plug and play with both Windows and Mac. Plug the mic into any USB port on your laptop and both Mac and PCs will almost automatically recognize it. With Windows computers, it will automatically install some basic USB drivers. With the Mac, it recognized it instantly. Make sure to go into your audio settings and under input devices, make sure the Go Mic Direct is selected as your input device. Also make sure to adjust the input gain. If you’re plugging it into a port on your laptop, I’d recommend setting it at a 100%. And you’re now ready to record. And since the device has two recording surfaces, you can plug it into a usb port on either side of the laptop. The recording surface also tilts about 90 degrees, so you can adjust it to face the sound source. The Go Mic Direct is also compatible with iPads and iPhones, using the Apple Lightning camera adapter. I’ll leave a link to that connector below.
Now just to show you the recording quality of this mic, I’m first going to let you hear the audio from the in-built microphone on the 2015 MacBook Pro.
So should you buy the Go Mic Direct. Well, if you’re looking to get better audio than what you currently have on your laptop and are not looking to spend a lot of money, the Go Mic Direct will make a pretty big difference to your audio quality. Its great for Skyping, Facetime, Vlogging or Podcasting. And its also great that this little mic is very portable. You can slip it into your laptop bag and take it wherever you go. However, if you’re looking for a mic for more serious vocals and voiceovers, I’d recommend spending a little more and getting the CAD U37, I’ll leave a link to that mic below. It just produces much better audio quality than the Go Mic Direct and its also a plug-n-play usb mic.
