Today we're going to look at the Cam Caddie Scorpion EX. And what this grip allows you to do is mount any camera with a ¼-20 thread. You can also attach devices like the iPhone or the Go-Pro camera with a suitable adapter. You can attach the camera in several different orientations, thanks to the Cam Caddie Scorpion's movable screw and the slotted base. You can also attach a shoe-mounted accessory such as a rode videomic or a LED camera light, using movable shoe mount accessory. You get one shoe mount accessory with the Cam Caddie Scorpion EX, but you can buy and add as many of these as you like. Each of these currently sell for about 20dollars in the US. The handle is pretty comfortable and has a rubberized grip. The Cam Caddie Scorpion EX is about 8 inches deep and has about 5.75 inches of vertical clearance without the accessory adapter and about 4.75 inches with the adapter installed. This is will ensure it fits small DSLRs, camcorders and GoPros. However, it is a good idea to check your camera's dimension before you buy the Scorpion EX. One of the most unique features of the Cam Caddie Scorpion EX is that you can mount it to a tripod with an optional cheese plate. However, the cheese plate is quite expensive, currently about $50 dollars in the US, and you should only consider buying this if you absolutely need to mount your rig to a tripod.
When the camera is mounted, you get much better grip and ergonomics. And this is very essential for cameras that weren't designed for comfortable video shooting. You can also shoot very low to the ground footage, as you can see here. This definitely isn't a replacement for a steadycam or glidecam, but the footage is more stable than free-hand shooting. Its definitely a better grip and but much less of a stabilizer. It also keeps the camera more stable, when panning, as you can see in the footage here.
The frame of the Cam Caddie Scorpion EX is reasonably stiff and there's very little flex. And if you absolutely want to eliminate the flex, Cam Caddie does sell an optional lockout kit.
One thing we don't like about the Cam Caddie scorpion EX is that the mounting thumbscrew isn't permanently attached to the base. Now we complained about this problem when we reviewed the Cam Caddie Scorpion and this makes it very easy to lose or misplace the thumbscrew when out in the field. It does have a thread on the side to store the screw when it isn't being used, but its definitely a minor annoyance.
