Welcome to America’s abandoned city, a
place completely frozen in time.

The mostly-abandoned island of Adak, Alaska is without a doubt the most bizarre and fascinating island in the United States. Once a bustling town of 6000, only 77 hearty souls remain here today. At its height, it was one of the most strategic naval air bases during the Cold War, monitoring Russian submarine activity on the edge of the Pacific rim, the island being closer to Tokyo, Japan than Seattle, Washington.

that all changed when in 1997 the decision was made to close the naval airbase after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. All of the land and buildings were transferred to the local native tribal group, and the the Navy formally abandoned the island.

Today, Adak is but a shell of its former glory, with most of its buildings now derelict and lying in ruin, beaten down by the island’s incessant rain, wind, and seismic activity. Some of the main highlights on the island include the fascinating Bering Hill recreation center, which is an urbexer’s dream; inside, you’ll find an old Baskin Robbin’s, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and the old movie theatre - all frozen in time.
