ORIGINS OF THE BON RELIGION
Much like in the rest of northern and central Asia, the oldest religion in Tibet was a form of shamanism. However, a Zoroastrian movement called Zurvanism penetrated into Tibet in the 6th century and in the following centuries almost completely merged with Tibetan shamanism. The outcome of this process was the Bon religion. Though this quintessentially Tibetan religion spread throughout the Himalayas from the 8th to the 10th centuries, its Zurvanistic origins date back to the 2nd millennium BCE. Today, the Bon religion and Tibetan Buddhism coexist in syncretized forms.
