Travel Vlog #87 | El Chaltén, Santa Cruz, Argentina Patagonia
After spending multiple days exploring El Calafate and the Perito Moreno glacier, it's time to head north, to a frontier town named El Chaltén. While El Calafate is known for its access to Perito Moreno, El Chaltén has Fitz Roy, which is the start of many treks, day hikes, and tours. We drove north from El Calafte, stopping at a glacier museum along the way! We drove across teal blue rivers, desert landscapes, and wild animals. Getting to El Chaltén is just as much about the journey as arriving at your destination, and first impressions of El Chaltén honestly feels like you're arriving in the final frontier. With a population of 1100-1600 (depending on the season), El Chaltén feels relatively undiscovered. The locals are hardworking, friendly people, and there is no shortage of hospitality for the trekkers and backpackers that pass through.
After finding our mountain cabin at the base of the mountains, we had some burgers and headed to bed. The next morning we got up at 5am to see the famous Fitz Roy light up with the sun! This is a unique opportunity, and you should take it if you have the chance. Because of the climate, there are far more cloudy and hazy days than sunny and clear ones. To see the Fitz Roy mountain is more rare than it seems on social media and brochures. We admired the alpenglow for over 2 hours, trying to absorb just how beautiful this area of the world was, and we were almost alone while doing it!
After we recovered from our early morning, we headed up El Chaltén's version of a highway, AKA a bumpy gravel road that made us glad we purchased full coverage car insurance haha. We didn't have a clear destination in mind, but ended up at Lago Del Desierto, also known as the lake of the desert! We hopped on a boat tour conveniently leaving at the same time we arrived, and headed across the lake. While this lake doesn't actually cross the Chile border, it gets so close that you can do a day trek across the border and back, just make sure to not miss the last boat!
