Developing heart cells from embryonic stem cells | Arash Pezhouman, M.D.

Every year, more than 1 million Americans have a heart attack. While there are therapies that can improve heart functionality after an attack, many patients eventually face heart failure and need a transplant. To combat the donor organ shortage, Dr. Arash Pezhouman works with Dr. Reza Ardehali’s lab to create heart cells from human embryonic stem cells. Their goal is to engineer the stem cell-generated heart cells so that they will not cause rejection by the patient’s immune system. Dr. Pezhouman hopes this approach will some day provide an unlimited, universal source of heart cells for patients with cardiovascular disease.
