The island of Faial was first discovered in 1427 by the Portuguese. Faial Island or Fayal is an island of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean and is part of the Azores islands. The Capelinhos Volcano is the westernmost point of Europe. The main city of Faial is Horta. 15,000 live on the island. The half of the population live in the town of Horta. The highest mountain of the Azores can be found on Pico Island. Mount Pico is also the highest point in Portugal, at 2,351 m (7,713 ft).
