THERMOPYLAE Θερμοπυλών 🇬🇷 Monument to the 300 of King Leonidas Drone Aerial Greece Ελλάδα Λεωνίδας

In 480 BC World's biggest autocratic Empire attacked the free city states of Ancient Greece in a massive and overwhelming force the world had not seen before. The Greek city states, traditional rivals, had to join forces to repel the attack of the Persians. History estimates that the Persian had a force of circa 300,000 soldiers. The Greek city states could only deliver a much smaller number of soldiers and they decided to defend their homeland at the battle of Thermopylae under command of the legendary Spartan King Leonidas. Leonidas selected a small but proffessional military unit of 300 Spartan soldiers. The Spartan soldiers were assisted by 700 Thespian soldiers who refused to surrender to the Persians and fought to death with the Spartans.

Although the Greeks lost the battle of Thermopylae, it eventually became a Pyrrhus victory for the Persians as they lost the war against Greece. Around a century later Alexander the Great had the opportunity to conquer the Persian Empire. The sacrifice of Leonidas and the 300 Spartans is commemorated all over the Western World and in the Monument to the 300 Spartans and the Monument to the 700 Thespians.
