Santiago de Chile (2024) is the capital of Chile. The metropolitan area of Santiago has almost 8 million people. The city was founded by Pedro de Valdivia in 1541. Santiago is located on high altitude (650m) in the Andes Mountains along the Mapocho River. There are several parks like the Parque Forestal and the Balmaceda Park. Chile is well known for its wine production in the area of Santiago. Highlights of the city are the Statue of the Immaculate Conception, Santiago's financial district, the Santa Lucía Hill, the National Library of Chile, the University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and La Moneda Palace.
