The name is given after 450 AD when the bishop Geminiano intervened to save the castle from destruction by the followers of Attila the Hun.
In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance it was a stopping point for Catholic pilgrims bound for Rome and the Vatican. The development of the city has also been improved by the trade in agricultural products from the nearby fertile hills, in particular saffron, used both for cooking and dyeing clothes and for Vernaccia wine, which has inspired popes and poets.
However, the peace of the city was disturbed by the conflict between Guelphs and Ghibellines and family rivalries within San Gimignano, which led the competing families to build tower houses of ever higher height. Towards the end of the medieval period, there were 72 tower houses in number, up to 70 meters (230 feet) high, which is why it is also known as the medieval Manhattan.
The city flourished until 1348, when it was hit by the black plague that struck the whole of Europe, and about half of the citizens died.

✱The Devil's Tower is perhaps one of the most famous towers in the village and is located beside the cathedral. Legend has it that the owner found the tallest tower he had left after returning from a long journey. From here the tower was seen as the work of the Devil and took the characteristic name. The architecture of the tower gives it a sinister and esoteric aspect and is distinguished from adjacent structures by the use of white limestone.

✱San Gimignano is the village where the game Assassin's Creed II is set: the second chapter of the series focuses on the affairs of the Florentine nobleman Ezio Auditore. The game is set in Italy during the Renaissance period.
