Cortona is located on a hill almost 500 meters above sea level.
As it was for the Etruscans, Cortona is still in a strategic position which allows, with short trips, to reach important artistic and cultural centers.
They were built by the Etruscans in the 4th century BC. the imposing walls that still surround the city for about three kilometers, the noble tombs known as "melon" scattered around the city and the monumental funerary altar adorned with sphinxes, a unique example in Italy. In Cortona the Tabula Cortonensis was also found, a bronze sheet with one of the longest inscriptions in the Etruscan language.

Thanks to its typically Tuscan historical center, Cortona is loved and visited by many foreign tourists, especially English and Americans. In the Anglo-Saxon countries the tourist success of Cortona is also due to the success of a film "Under the Tuscan sun", with Diana Lane, shot almost entirely in the city. Similarly to what foreign tourists do in front of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, every day many American tourists look out onto Piazza Signorelli eager to take a "selfie" in front of the fountain in the square, where one of the most romantic scenes of the film was shot. Too bad that, unlike in Rome, the much desired fountain does not exist, because it was built only to enrich the scenography of the film and dismantled at the end of the shoot.
