The history of Anguillara Sabazia and its area is closely linked to that of the ancient populations who frequented this territory. In fact, the area possesses significant evidence, already starting from the Neolithic era.

The ancient historic center of Anguillara was born on the structures of ancient Roman houses, built on the promontory where the town currently extends.
A rich Roman patrician, Rutilia Polla, owned a villa on the shores of the lake, just below the Collegiata, and raised lake fish to supply the Rome market. The villa was shaped like a corner, and therefore called *Angularia* (corner house); hence the name *Anguillara* derives.

The territory, around the year 1000, must have been almost uninhabited, belonging to the Vatican.
The first archival documents that attest to its birth are dated to the 11th century.

The origin of the *Anguillara family*, which took place around 950 with Raimone, is shrouded in mystery. It is said in fact that around the 10th century. there was a dragon that populated the area of ​​Malagrotta that terrified its inhabitants.
Raimone managed to defeat him by the lake, in the territory that would later re-enter the possessions of Anguillara and the pope, grateful for this service, gave him the territory.
In reality it is conceivable that the dragon-snake was simply a band of marauders who terrorized the local inhabitants, until the day it was defeated by warlike forces.

Having become a county (County of Anguillara) with the Orsini family in the 15th century, Angullara was incorporated in 1560 into the Duchy of Bracciano, also ruled by the Orsini, until they sold it to the Marquis Francesco Grillo in 1693.

The suffix *Sabazia*, deriving from the name of the area, serves to distinguish it from an homonymous center in the Padua area, Anguillara Veneta.
