**Some History**
According to the local historian Filippo Cerasuoli, the original name of Maiori, like that of the watercourse that crosses the city itself, is "Rheginna", deriving from the name of the Etruscan lucumone who founded it .
Only later, during the Roman dominion, due to a toponymic problem of confusion with a smaller and nearby town of the same name, was the appellative of "Major" added to "Rheginna" from which, passing through Maiuri, it will derive the current name of the city.

The appellative of "Minor" was added to the other town, from which the current name of Minori will derive. The relationship between the two inhabited centers, to which a major and a minor one, which ensured its name, was decisive in these second names.

In the 4th century BC the Picentini, an Italic people attested in Campania from the third century BC. settled on the Amalfi coast, they were defeated by the Romans who, in the Romanization of the area, restored the city. In the period of the fall of the Western Roman Empire there were other settlements.

In 842 the urban realities of the coast gathered in the "Confederation of the Amalfi States". Their inhabitants, collectively, were called "Amalfi".
Each city in that period maintained its own name and administrative autonomy, playing a specific role in the Confederation: Maiori was the seat of the admiralty, customs, the salt warehouse and numerous arsenals. He then distinguished himself in fishing, agriculture, trade and the paper industry.

The cities of the Confederation then took part, in 872 , in the oldest maritime republic ever founded, that of Amalfi.

During this period the city implemented a strong fortification policy.
Around 1000 Maiori became part of the Principality of Salerno and followed its historical events.

After the year 1000 the Norman warriors appeared in Southern Italy, hired from time to time in local disputes by the powerful on duty. In particular, the Altavilla family, among which Roberto il Guiscardo stood out, married the princess of Salerno Sichelgaita, daughter of Duke Guaimario IV, who in 1076 besieged and conquered Salerno taking the title of Duke of Puglia, Calabria and Sicily and therefore also power over the Mayorese city. It was during the Norman domination of the peninsula that the Salicerchio Tower (still existing) was built in Maiori.

In the 13th century a cedar wood statue of the Madonna was found in the nets of some fishermen, this will then be transported to the church of the Castle of San Michele Arcangelo and elected as main patron with the title of Santa Maria a Mare, which will later be transferred to the entire pre-existing church.

Following the invasions first Saracen, then Pisan, and the Norman conquest, Maiori experienced a period of crisis that brought back the local economy agriculture, fishing and craftsmanship: the slow decline of the Mayorese maritime economy contributed to a change in the urban layout of the city, which began to develop again along the course of the Reginna Major and no longer on the coast . To worsen the crisis there was then in 1343 a devastating tsunami also mentioned in a letter from Francesco Petrarca addressed to Cardinal Giovanni Colonna, and in 1348 the arrival of the plague.
