Described by Livy as one of the Capitae Etruriae (Etruscan capitals), Arezzo (Aritim in Etruscan) is believed to have been one of the twelve most important Etruscan cities—the so-called Dodecapolis, part of the Etruscan League.
Arezzo is one of the major gold districts of Italy, as its goldsmith crafting is appreciated all over the world. Among the most important events are the Giostra del Saracino, one of the most famous historical and folkloric event in Italy, and the Antiques Fair, an important monthly event that attracts many enthusiasts and collectors.
For art lovers, Arezzo is a true delight. It is mainly thanks to the legacy left by its two most gifted sons: the stunning frescos by Piero della Francesca: The History of the True Cross(1453–1464) in the Church of San Francesco, and the main square Piazza Grande with the elegant loggia designed by Vasari (the same Vasari who planned the Uffizi in Florence).

Curiosity:
✱The musical notation (on tetragamma, not the current pentagram) was invented by Guido d'Arezzo, Benedictine monk and singing teacher of the Arezzo cathedral. The name of the notes derived from the first syllable of the verses of a hymn to St. John the Baptist intoned in such a way, called the Guidonian hand, to remind students of the sounds of the intervals that make up the major or Ionic scale; system still used in kindergarten to teach what is known as the C scale! The magic hymn sung reads:
"Ut(Do) queant laxis / Resonare fibris / Mira gestorum / Famuli quorum /
Solve polputi / Labii reatum / Sancte Iohannes"
