Orvieto stands on a tuff cliff and to reach the historic center from the railway station you need to get on the funicular. This characteristic means of transport introduces us to this enchanting village through a tunnel dug into the 123m long tuff rock, an exciting climb in the direction of a city full of churches and monuments.
Here stands the majestic and imposing symbol of the city in the collective imagination, the Cathedral, also called the Golden Lily of the cathedrals, for the mosaics that adorn its incomparable facade and for the interiors, a riot of works of art and for an artistic jewel, the Chapel of San Brizio, on whose walls there is the "Last Judgment" which is one of the finest examples of Italian painting. Dug deep into the tuff, a volcanic rock, these secret hidden tunnels are now open to view only through guided tours. The underground city boasts more than 1200 tunnels, galleries, wells, stairs, quarries, cellars, unexpected passageways, cisterns, superimposed rooms with numerous small square niches for pigeon roosts, detailing its creation over the centuries. Many of the homes of noble families were equipped with a means of escape from the elevated city during times of siege through secret escape tunnels carved from the soft rock. The tunnels would lead from the city palazzo to emerge at a safe exit point some distance away from city walls.
