Talks collapse: JD Vance says no deal with Iran is “bad news” for Tehran

High-stakes negotiations between the United States and Iran have ended without an agreement, with U.S. Vice President JD Vance warning that the outcome puts Tehran at a disadvantage.

The talks, which reportedly stretched for nearly a full day in Islamabad, were aimed at easing escalating tensions and addressing key disputes, including Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security concerns. Despite what officials described as “substantive discussions,” both sides walked away without a breakthrough.

Speaking after the negotiations, Vance made it clear that Washington was not prepared to compromise on critical demands. He said Iran failed to agree to terms put forward by the U.S., particularly those tied to nuclear restrictions and broader security guarantees.

Vance characterised the breakdown as a setback for Tehran, stating that the failure to secure a deal is “bad news for Iran much more than it is for the United States.”

Iranian officials, however, pushed back, accusing the U.S. of making unrealistic and excessive demands during the negotiations. Among the key sticking points were sanctions relief, limits on Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes, and wider geopolitical issues, including security in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The collapse of the talks now raises fresh concerns about instability in the region, with analysts warning that the lack of an agreement could lead to further escalation if diplomatic efforts stall.

While no immediate follow-up talks have been confirmed, diplomatic channels are expected to remain open as international mediators continue pushing for a resolution.
