10 Times The Glass Was Not Strong Enough

We depend on glass for many things these days and it’s in standard use in many industries. Sometimes, however, glass can be pushed past its breaking point and when it does shatter it can be a real drag for anyone who happens to be nearby. These 10 times the glass wasn’t strong enough help to sum up that issue perfectly.

Number 10. Demonstration Gone Wrong

Garry Hoy was a lawyer who fell to his death when giving an office tour to a group of students. He attempted to show them how strong the glass windows in the building were and decided to demonstrate the fact by throwing himself into the glass. He had done the same thing before, but this time he hit the glass too hard and the entire window popped out of its frame. He fell 24 stories and the window had to be replaced, hopefully with one that was a little safer. Then again, it’s probably not a good idea to body check a window in the first place.

Number 9. Tower Trouble

The John Hancock tower cost a stupid amount of money to construct and was supposed to be an engineering marvel when it was constructed. It ended up being more of a nightmare, with plenty of issues to deal with. One of these issues involved enormous 500 pound window panes working their way loose before falling to the sidewalk hundreds of feet below. It’s amazing that nobody was seriously injured when these huge panels gave way and after that point police took to closing off entire streets around the building whenever wind speeds exceeded 45 miles per hour. The window panes were eventually replaced by better panels that wouldn’t fall randomly on people’s heads, which is a big step up as far as we’re concerned.

Number 8. Gorilla Smashes Window

A gorilla that was fed up with being cooped in its enclosure at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. It’s also possible that it was pissed off at kids constantly pointing at it. Whatever the reason, the gorilla decided to show off its skills by running up and pounding on the glass, causing the entire window to break. Video footage of the scene shows a bunch of kids running away in terror after being rushed by the huge creature and we have to say that we’d probably be right behind them if we thought that the gorilla had a chance of breaking through the glass. It looks like it very well could have smashed right through the glass and it’s a good thing that it’s reinforced with multiple layers in order to prevent that sort of breakout from happening.

Number 7. Polar Bear Escape Artist

Polar bears are massive animals that have a lot of strength. So when a polar bar at the rotterdam zoo decided that it wasn’t happy in its enclosure, it went to work devising an escape plan. The bear was seen picking up a rock and throwing it down on a glass window looking into its pen. Nobody thought much of the bear’s antics until it finally threw the rock down so hard that it managed to break the glass, causing a decent amount of panic. The good news is that the glass didn’t break, keeping everyone safe from a giant polar bear. If it had gotten loose, it could have caused some serious damage and could have potentially killed people in the process. The zoo made a point of reinforcing the enclosure when the did repairs to ensure that something like this won’t ever happen again.

Number 6. Deer Breaks Store Window

Rampaging deer aren’t an issue for most of us, but they seem to be a major problem in Stillwater, Oklahoma if this video is any indication of what’s going on there. The video went viral pretty soon after it was released and it’s easy to see why. The deer in question was a buck that decided it wasn’t willing to wait until the morning for American Eagle Outfitters to open up. Instead, it charged straight through the window, smashing its way in. The buck then hung out in the store until emergency services were called in to investigate the situation. They didn’t really know what to do right off the bat and they ended up spooking the deer, which decided that its shopping trip was pretty much done anyway. The deer burst through another window when leaving the store and between both jumps it ended up being pretty bruised and battered. The broken glass cut it in multiple places, but it was still able to run off without being caught. Rescue crews searched for the deer throughout the night, but were unable to find it.
