In this episode:
Jack has arrived in Brazil on his mission to find and collect data from Green Anacondas! He has already found one baby anaconda, but is on the hunt for more. He joins up with locals to help him, and stays with the Arawete Tribe in the Amazon. He finds some amazing animals including a caiman and a tarantula, but anacondas are still as elusive as ever!

Expedition Anaconda:
Three years ago Jack Randall embarked on one of the most ambitious missions of his life: to traverse the Amazon rainforest via boat to search out the world’s most massive snake, the Green Anaconda. Back in 2017 we released the series as it was shot but now we’re revisiting this epic adventure to tell the story from beginning to end. This is our Amazon Adventure re-visited; Tracking Green Anacondas through the Amazon Rainforest.

About Jack Randall:
Jack Randall, Zoologist and Filmmaker, is on a mission to meet every single species on the planet – up close and personal. Mentored by Steve Irwin at an early age, Jack went on to study Zoology at Oxford University before following in his mentors’ steps to fiercely protect and showcase amazing and often misunderstood animals.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS RESEARCH MISSION:

Following the unearthing of a giant Green Anaconda during the building of the new Belo Monte dam in the Brazilian Amazon, Jack embarks on a mission deep into the Rainforest to track and collect data from Green Anacondas. Little is known about these elusive snakes and the massive changes in habitat prompted by the dam puts pressure on their survival. The more information gathered about these Amazonian giants the more understanding scientists have about the impact of the dam.

What is the Belo Monte Dam?
The Belo Monte Dam is a dam development in Northern Brazil, deep in the Amazon Rainforest. Its development has brought about significant habitat changes, flooding has displaced humans and animals alike and immense pressure has been placed on the jungle ecosystems which support a huge diversity of life.

Why Green Anacondas?
The Green Anaconda is a top predator in the Amazon and therefore they are an important bioindicator species for monitoring the health of the disrupted habitats. It’s important to understand as much as possible about top predators because a healthy area can support lots of different types of life, this means lots of prey which means a jungle giant like the Green Anaconda can survive.

Our Local Teams:
Throughout this project we worked with local Brazilians without whom we would have failed. From our boat drivers, Felix and George, the local fisherman, dam workers and market vendors who shared their stories and knowledge; the Araweté and Parakana Tribes who invited us to stay and helped set up our Anaconda search parties and all the residents along the river who shared with us their homes, and their coffee. Thank you!

The Science:
Throughout the Amazonian Rainforest mission Prof. Emil Hernandez supervises data collection in the field and Nayara Sabrina joins as translator, research assistant and field producer. Prof Jesus Rivas will be supervising data collection of Anacondas from a swamp habitat unaffected by the dam and has overall responsibility for collating the DNA samples collected. This DNA collected forms a part of an ongoing Anaconda study.
