In this Chemistry video in Hindi for Class 12 we explained the reason behind wide range of electrical conductivity in solids. According to ability to allow electric current solids are categorised in three categories, viz., conductor, insulator and semiconductor. Electrical conductivity can be explained with the band theory. This is a topic from the chapter 'The Solid States' for Class 12th Chemistry.

If the conduction band and the valance band overlap, solid becomes conductor.
If the band gap (forbidden energy gap) between the conduction band and the valance band is small, solid becomes semiconductor.
If the band gap between the conduction band and the valance band is very high, solid becomes insulator.
