So this is a fun experiment I have done with the welding electrodes. I was thinking about this for a long time and now when I got chance I give it a shot. Building a knife from welding is definitely difficult but i think tig welding gives a good result in this situation. I definitely made another one once I have the tig welding machine. I was definitely not confident about this build because no one ever did that and there is nothing you can get info about that. But the only plan I follow is to keep the workpiece as clean as possible. I use pickling agent regularly to remove the oxidation from the surface, other than this I also use a wire brush and wire wheels to clean up the billet. For the build, I use two different kinds of Welding Electrode. For the edge, I use high carbon electrode having Carbon content around.045 to 0.50% and the second one is SS 308 grade. The electrode is similar to 1045 or 1050 medium carbon steel with around 20% of chrome. For the build there are actually two different methods one is that which I use in this video and the second one is a layer technique method like which you see in 3d printers. But no matter what procedure you chose both needs cleanliness in the work. The plan for the build is pretty simple laying the electrode and tack weld them and then after the cleanup weld them at a slightly higher temperature so that material can fuse together. Even I perform welding at higher temprature I also decided to forged weld the biller so that if there is a lack of fusion between the pieces this part can solve the problem. Since the 308 have very less carbon content that's why I tried to perform the case hardening process although that was completely in-necessary but I tried to give it a shot. I mixed charred leather with salt and plain flour in the ratio of 6:4:3 and then coat my knife with this mix and allow it to dry. Then I put it in the case which I made off-camera from stainless steel sheet which is around 2mm thick and put it into the forge. The process of case hardening is simple and for that, you have to keep that carbon wrapped case around your job for a fixed time. I planned to do it for around 40 minutes, but around the 15 minutes when I take a closer look over the case it completely vanishes. This all done because the temperature rises too much and it melts the steel. The tip was also melted but that wasn't a huge problem. After that, I decided to do immediate quench in the water but I didn't temper it. After the hand sanding is done up to 1500 grit I heat up the knife spine to the straw colour which also reduced the stresses from the edge of the knife and also temper it. That thing gives it an extremely beautiful finish and I personally love this finish. Other than this if you are thinking about structuran integrity of the knife and how it holds the edge than I have to tell you that before proceeding to finish I banished this hard onto the metal pipe and there is not even a single crack appeared, it means a solid body construction. As far as edge retention is concerned it holds the edge like 1045-1050 steel but I have to say that medium hitting didn't blunt the edge at all because, in the end, I have to cut vegetables and foodstuff, its not a fighting weapon. You cant use sword if the work is to be done by the needle. Everything is made for different purpose thats what I wanted to say. That's all about the journey of this knife.
