Kobe Bryant took everything personal. He used it to fuel him, motivate him. There was no one that was gonna be better than him in his mind. And players have been telling more and more stories about how they would say one sentence, forget about it, and months later Kobe would score 50 points on them and say one line about you the reason why I got 50.

So in the 2000 NBA Finals, Jalen Rose tried to hurt Kobe multiple times. And let's just say, Kobe didn't forget.

So that's Jalen Rose, he's a broadcaster with the cleanest hairline, how, what, he's 49. He also played in the NBA, he was actually solid, he averaged over 20 points a game for a few seasons, helped the Pacers be a championship contending team in the early 2000s.

Which was the same time period as the Lakers run and Kobe's rise to stardom. The 1999 playoffs was when Kobe established himself as Shaq's partner. The 1999-2000 season was the first season Kobe averaged over 20, another All-Star year, Kobe was clearly progressing. So the Lakers make their run to the finals, there's the lob, Kobe is now averaging over 20 in the playoffs. And so when the Pacers meet the Lakers, it's no surprise that the Pacers are gonna throw a lot of defense at Kobe. But double Kobe and Shaq eats, double Shaq and Kobe eats. And Shaq ate. The Pacers are, well scrappy. Reggie is a trash talker, a fighter, and that trickled down to all the players including a one Jalen Rose, so when the Lakers are pulling away in the second quarter of Game 1, Rose elbows Kobe straight in the face. But nothing happens and Kobe just keeps playing. He ends up with 14 points, Shaq ends with 43 and 19.

But Game 2, after losing to the Lakers, Rose wasn't gonna be denied and so on a jumpshot in the 1st quarter, Rose closes out and hits Kobe's foot as he's landing. Kobe goes down, and doesn't get up easily. He called it the worst sprained ankle of his career. It’s the same type of dirty play Zaza did that took out Kawhi for a year. Yeah, that shit is dangerous. And as Rose said,

Kobe went out of the Game after only 9 minutes played and the Lakers pulled it out with Shaq scoring 40 and 24. But Kobe was out for Game 3, and the Lakers lose. So Game 4, Kobe's no where close to 100% but the Lakers need him, Kobe's tryna figure out exactly which ways he can explode and which ways he can't. Well it's a back and forth game that goes into overtime. Once again Shaq is dominant, and Kobe is giving them buckets, but Shaq fouls out. And then a 21 year old Kobe does this.

8 in overtime, 28 points for the game.

The Lakers win a pivotal Game 4 and eventually win the Finals. And during those finals, Rose averaged 23 points on 47% from the field and 50% from 3. Again Rose was solid. But he had injured Kobe, something that he hadn't forgotten.

We fast forward 6 years later on January 22, 2006. And immediately a lot of you know where I'm going with this. Oh you don't? Well, here's Jalen Rose on the Raptors, and here's Kobe Bryant.

27 in the 3rd quarter alone, 81 for the entire game, leading his team back. 81, not off some late free throws where your team is fouling the other team to give you more time, nah a true 81, 28 of 46 from the field. This was the season Kobe averaged over 35 in a slow pace NBA that averaged under 100 points per game. A calm, focused, Black Mamba.

Ok to be fair, Kobe only scored 18 on Jalen specifically, but Jalen also fouled Kobe a ton which isn't counted in these point totals. Also young Chris Bosh. In any high scoring performance, it's always multiple players that are scored on. And let's be honest, it didn't matter who was on Kobe.

Kobe doesn't even know if it was accidental or on purpose, but he was so locked in. It doesn't surprise me though, because if you read up on any Kobe story, everything to him was motivation, he always was prepared, he knew personell, what their tendencies were. He knew that Jalen Rose was on the Raptors, that he would be guarding him since Vince Carter had just left the season before. Kobe definitely had some motivation and he chose the right moment to strike and go off for possibly the greatest single game in modern NBA history.

I didn't know about this connection for his 81 point game, but it makes sense. A lot of Kobe's greatest individual performances have some sort of tangible motivation in addition to the fire Kobe already had. I miss him man, but he continues to be an inspiration for me.
