Giant Coconut crab

What’s huge, antisocial, and is willing to steal away any coconuts they see? Giant Coconut crab of course. An animal has to be really big for even Charles Darwin to be stunned by its “monstrous size”. These crabs look almost fake with their 3 feet size. Where does this thing fit in? Is it a lobster? Perhaps a space alien?

None of that, they’re just regular hermit crabs that walk under a magnifier. Coconuts are super hard to break open but these crabs do it easily. But they also eat tropical fruits, fallen plant material, and well, dead animals. In fact, they’ll even eat their own kind. They’ve only recently evolved to eat coconuts but if they’re low on nutrients, they might even eat their own discarded body parts.

Attacus Atlas

What makes butterflies gorgeous? It’s their dainty build and colorful wings, of course. So how would you feel about these gigantic ones? The Attacus Atlas isn’t really butterflies, they’re moths who are cultivated for their… silk? Unlike silk produced by the silk moth, the atlas moth produces silk in broken strands, making them less desirable.

However, their cocoons are big enough to make really cute pocket change purses. These months have given people a lot of creative inspiration. What do you think the movie Mothra was based on? It’s these fluttery friends!
