The origins of reciprocal help

In her presentation for the Leibniz ScienceCampus Primate Cognition on April 29th, 2021, Manon Schweinfurth (University of St. Andrews) proposed that reciprocal cooperation is not restricted to humans but can also be found in non-human animals. She argued that reciprocity is not necessarily cognitively demanding and likely to be widespread. Manon presented the results of a series of studies on the mechanisms of reciprocal cooperation in Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus), which showed that Norway rats reciprocally exchange goods and services between and within different commodities and independent of kinship. She concluded her presentation with a discussion about the evidence for reciprocity in non-human primates.
