Some numbers (and percentages) surrounding pediatric hospitalizations in Florida

A lot of people have been talking about children, especially with recent increase in cases, testing, and hospitalizations prior to, and immediately after, their return to school. I recently heard a lot of people reporting that the percentage of all hospitalizations that children make up is about a percent-and-a-half, without much change over time.

That did not make a whole lot of sense to me since one of the primary determinants in getting hospitalized with COVID-19 is whether you have been vaccinated. Children 12-17 have near the lowest vaccination rates of any age group and, of course, those younger than 12 cannot yet receive a COVID-19 vaccine. So, on average, even though they are MUCH less likely to be hospitalized, it would have been logical to think they would make up a slightly higher % of hospitalizations since they are (1) less vaccinated on average, and (2) were experiencing some of the highest infection rates (compare to other age groups) recently.

So, I’m just discussing a few important considerations when looking at this issue.

#Update: sorry for my lazy math on a few of the slides - certainly does not change the substance of what's being covered, but is off slightly (like dividing 1 by 29 instead of 1 by 30). #ForgiveMe =)
