Now Julius Randle signed a 4 year $117 million extension this offseason. He was efficient, he was making great passes, strong. He caught the league by storm, 6’ 8” 250 pounds.

He’s averaging 19.6 points, 10.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists which doesn’t seem terrible until you realize he’s shooting 42% from the field, 30.1% from 3, can’t create a lick of space, is horrible in the clutch shooting 37% from the field, it’s been bad, real bad. Except the passing, the passing been solid.

And the Knicks have followed. 25-33, 12th in the East, with a schedule like this coming up. Along with all the losses have come boos, Randle telling fans to f off, and trade rumors. The frustration is coming out.

The Knicks be giving Julius Randle the ball on the left wing, but, they be giving him the ball there over and over and over again, expecting him to get by his defender and finish or step back. But Randle has been unable to drive by defenders and unable to make midranges. He’s shooting 34% from midranges, still shooting shots like this. Shot selection is horrible

Randle wasn’t particularly good at posting up last season, getting 0.93 points per possession and being in the 46th percentile. This season, he’s even worse, 0.69 points per possession and in the 11th percentile in the league.

And a lot of times, Randle just doesn’t seem into it. Like deadass, the effort doesn’t seem there. Last year was his contract year, but even on the Pelicans, he averaged 21.4 points and 9 boards. It was the playmaking and 3 point shooting that took him to the next level. He led the league in minutes last year and he’s playing high minutes this year.

And the thing is, the Knicks knew what Randle had done in the playoffs last year. If you didn’t, here’s a summary. The Knicks were embarrassed and at the center of that was Julius Randle. The most improved player of the year, the all-star, averaged 18 points on 29.8% from the field.

The Knicks are still one of the most valuable franchises in the league despite being ass for years. In fact, they have only made the playoffs 4 times in the past 10 years and won 1 round in total. New York City was buzzing with excitement. The first playoffs in 6 years. So when your clear #1 player pretty much lays an egg in the playoffs including going 2 of 15, fans weren’t happy. As Knicks fans, we’re used to disappointment so we didn’t turn against the team, more like happy to be here.**

But I was always of the mindset that the Hawks treated him like a star and he just wasn’t ready for that attention. He had been used to mismatches, players not being quick enough or not strong enough and Randle could take them where he wanted on the court. Fair enough. Next season, he would be ready, next season he would know how to deal with double teams, pass out of them, how to pick his spots. I didn’t think he would be unable to get by Maxi Kleber in a one on one in the regular season.

4th quarter Randle this year has been disappointing, almost seeming like he runs out of gas and the Knicks as a whole have struggled in the clutch. There has been no effort defensively either. Randle is a -3.6, the Knicks actually get better defensively with Randle off the court.

So when you get signed to a pretty big contract in a city like NYC where the fans are ruthless, and you just had an extremely disappointing playoffs, you can’t all of a sudden flip all fans. Because you know you’re playing bad and the team is also bad. If you can take all the praise, the love, you gotta also be willing to take the bad.

The Knicks are struggling. Part of that is the Knicks don’t have many shot creators right now. Derrick Rose who was there off the dribble creator last year is injured. Kemba just can’t play offense anymore. RJ just got hurt but they were struggling even with him. This means Randle has had to be more of a shot creator this year.

So yes, the tables have turned. Julius Randle has fallen out of graces and it’s a public dispute, but his play itself is hurting his case more than anyone. As a Knicks fan, I get nothing from Randle being bad. **We’re not supposed to be tanking even though it looks like we are. I hope he gets that same fire back cause his story is inspiring. Came into the league got hurt, had work his way back and prove that he can be a good player in this league. I don’t know what the Knicks are tryna do cause we know how bad the organization can be*.* I do wanna see Julius Randle thrive, but with how the Knicks are featuring him, how he’s played, things aren’t looking great, but what do you think? Can Randle turn it around?**
