Swiss Railway Journeys - The Appenzell Railways
This is the official channel of the TV show Swiss Railway Journeys, run in association with MITV, the production company that created the show. The following episode represents original content made and copyrighted by MITV, and its content is in no way repurposed.
Climb aboard the little red trains of the Appenzell Railways group for a scenic rail tour through picturesque north-eastern Switzerland.
We begin our journey at Gossau and roll through lush Appenzell countryside, making stops at the historic cantonal capitals of Herisau and Appenzell before reaching the end of the line at Wasserauen. A trip up the Säntis mountain allows us to admire the panoramic views over the entire region.
At Appenzell we change lines for the journey to St. Gallen, making a diversion at Gais to take the rack railway over the mountain ridge to drop into the Rhine valley at Altstätten. The steep descent provides us with stunning views into Austria.
We look at the history of the AB and SGA companies and learn about the steam heritage of the railway. Locomotive No. 14, once part of the Rhaetian railway fleet, now hauls special excursions through the region. At Teufen we watch overnight track repairs, a necessary part of railway maintenance.
Journey's end is at the ancient city of St. Gallen, formerly one of Europe's premier monastic centres. We look at some of the treasures in the baroque Cathedral library, before strolling around the old quarter with its lovely houses and splendid oriel windows.
