Swiss Railway Journeys - RhB Arosa Line

This is the official channel of the TV show Swiss Railway Journeys, run in association with MITV, the production company that created the show. The following episode represents original content made and copyrighted by MITV, and its content is in no way repurposed.

Travel with us along the Rhaetian Railway's impressive metre gauge tracks connecting the cantonal capital at Chur to the high alpine resort of Arosa. We make the journey in one of the open-air wagons, which are extremely popular in summer, to enjoy an uninterrupted view of the countryside.

This, originally private, company is now part of the RhB, but its station is to be found not in the main complex but in the street outside. We begin our ride along the streets of Chur, where motorised transport must give way to the train. We pause to wander around the old quarter of this historic town before leaving to run along the wild wooded Schanfigg valley.

Along the way we pause to look at local farming, beautiful alpine flowers and traditional architecture as well as the strange "earthmen", pillars of rock caused by erosion, which can be found at various places along the route.

This line has always been electrically powered, and we look at the history of the route. We admire the impressive Langwies viaduct, one of the first ferro-concrete constructions in Switzerland.
Journey's end is at the charming resort of Arosa, a popular holiday destination all the year round, and we view the village and surrounding attractions.
(recorded in 1992)
