Swiss Railway Journeys - The Emmental Railways Part 1: SMB/EBT

Join us for a rail adventure through the beautiful Emmental Region of Switzerland, from the Swiss Jura to the lake-side at Thun in the Bernese Oberland.

We begin our journey at Moutier, before winding our way through the wooded valleys of the Jura, pausing at Weissenstein to take the chair-lift up the mountainside to enjoy panoramic views of the Alps. At the ancient town of Solothurn, important since Roman times, we see the beautiful old quarter.

We change trains for the ride through the rolling countryside of Canton Bern to Burgdorf. Here we take the opportunity to view the medieval castle and the fascinating museum of music, with its wonderful collection of gramophones. The line continues through the lush farming landscape of the Emmental region with its distinctive farms. We look at the history of the line and its locos, enjoying a steam special and learning about the early electric machines pioneered by this company.

Journey's end is at the lakeside town of Thun, where we explore the ancient castle and town, before boarding one of the surviving paddle steamboats which operate along the sparkling blue waters between Thun and Interlaken.
