Informed consent and children's privacy to be part of new online data reforms
Online social media apps could be fined millions of dollars for breaching the privacy of children and selling their data under new laws.
The Federal government will commence online data reforms with a part of the focus to be on a ‘children’s online privacy code’.
The reforms would prohibit companies such as TikTok from targeting ads at children and selling their data.
Companies will soon need to obtain informed consent from children when handling their collected data.
More than 500,000 Australian children use TikTok, which has been widely condemned for targeting kids with hidden advertising.
