Experts from the London Art Fair 2014 share their top tips for investing in art

Novice collectors hoping to invest in art should look to technical brilliance, a solid CV and pick works that do not match their sofa, experts have said.

Curators and directors exhibiting at the London Art Fair 2014 have shared their insider tips for new buyers, disclosing the secrets of their trade and hinting at how to spot a bargain.

Experts featured include Sarah Monk, director of the fair, Julia Alvarez from Bearspace gallery, Maria Stenfors, Rupert Otten from Wolseley Fine Arts, and Michael Foley from Foley gallery.

More than 120 galleries are exhibiting at the fair this year, with star collections including the new Hepworth Wakefield pavilion, showcasing the work of Barbara Hepworth, and an exhibition of Japanese Gutai artists.

The Art Projects section will feature emerging artists, while Photo50 documents the changing nature of photography in the digital era.

The fair is known for its range of works, attracting visitors from curious novices to established dealers, and has prices ranging from £50 for works by promising students to around £700,000 for the most notable Gutai paintings.

The fair is open from January 15 to 19 at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London.
