How to Replace an Alternator for Honda/Acura

In today's video, I'll show you how to replace an Alternator on my 2002 Acura TL-S. The alternator is responsible for providing the bulk of energy to the components in your car and also charging the battery. A common cause of alternator failure is often caused by a bad battery. Over time, battery cells can degrade and fail preventing them from reaching the desired 12.5v. However, your alternator can't detect if your battery is bad. It simply sees a battery with low voltage and tries really hard to charge it and supply the car's electrical demands which the battery cannot compensate for. This puts a high amount of strain on the alternator and if the battery is not replaced sooner than later, your alternator will also fail. This is why it's important to get your battery tested every year. You can perform a simple multimeter test on your battery which should read about 12.5v with the car off, and 14.5v when the car is running with all electronics off.

Symptoms of a bad alternator include an illuminated battery light in the dashboard, a battery voltage of less than 13.5v when the car is running, a battery voltage of less than 12v when the car is off, gauges not working, radio not working, and dim, flickering, or non-functional interior and exterior lights. When you first turn on your car, your alternator will sometimes make a short whine noise when it charges the battery. However, if this whining noise never goes away, this is a sign something might be wrong with the battery or charging system. On a very rare occasion, there might not be enough belt tension to spin the alternator pulley, so be sure to check if that's spinning too.
